Born in Philadelphia. His first hit was in 1961 with a soul version of a country song. The self proclaimed "King Of Rock & Soul" was in fact one of the most influential soul men of the sixties. His flambouyant style owed much to the fact he was a preacher while his success came from his ability to recognise that many well-known songs could be given the soul treatment (Dylan's "Maggie's Farm" and Creedence's "Proud Mary" among them).

Embarked on a solo career in 1960, signed to Liberty and recorded a string of hits for the next two years. By 1963, like many other Presley-inspired singers, his teen idol days were at an end. Although he kept recording, he died in a boating accident during a fishing holiday.
