COLLINS, JUDY.

Born 1st May 1939 in Denver, Colorado.
Guitar, vocals.
Took up classical piano at the age of six and made her first public performance aged 13, playing Mozart. Initially intended to be a concert pianist but began singing traditional material in the folk boom of the late l950s. Like many others, she turned to protest during the sixties and to writing much of her own material.
Unlike many other folk singers, her career has been wide and varied and she has done much to bring other musicians work to public attention (Sandy Denny, Joni Mitchell, Randy Newman). She also ignored conventions and recorded an album in 1968 with full orchestral backing before going in a different direction for the follow-up with her own electric band. That featured Stephen Stills, with whom she had an affair. His song "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" was written about her.
In 1969, she had a break from recording and turned to acting before returning to massive success with the hit single, "Amazing Grace" from the album "Whales And Nightingales" which does feature the eerily haunting "songs" of the humpback whales recorded off the Bahamas. In 1972, she turned to film directing and was nominated for an Oscar for her documentary on her old music professor, Antonia Brico.
The campaigning and experimentation of the sixties and seventies has gone and her public profile is much lower now than in the past. However, she does continue to perform.
