Started playing harmonica at the age of seven, after hearing Sonny Boy Williamson II
on the radio. Two years later, he ran away from home to learn from his hero. Sonny
Boy seems to have adopted him, introducing him to Willie Nix, Howlin' Wolf and others
as well as letting him play on his radio show.
Sonny Boy's fame had grown and he moved to Chicago, leaving Cotton to take over his
band at the age of eighteen. Although he'd started to cut records, he only made it
nationally when Muddy Waters asked him to join his band in 1954. It was a job he filled
on a part-time basis until forming his own band in 1966.
