LEADBELLY.

Real name Huddie Ledbetter.
Thought to have been born 20th January 1989 in Mooringsport, Louisiana. Died 6th December 1949 from polio, in New York
Accordion, guitar, harmonica, piano, vocals.
His first recordings were made for The Library Of Congress by Alan and John Lomax while he was serving time for attempted murder in Angola State Prison in Louisiana, 1933-34. "Leadbelly" was no stranger to prison having kiled a man in Texas in 1917. Although he was sentenced to life, he reputedly was freed having written a song for the prison govenor.
After another brief (one year) spell in jail in 1939, he got a job as driver to John Lomax before moving to New York and working the folk circuit with other seminal figures like Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee and Woody Guthrie. He soon became an established figure and by 1945 had his own radio show in Hollywood.
