  • 1945.Frank Sinatra leaves Hollywood by train for New York. The singer has been summoned to appear in front of the New York draft board for re-classification. On his first examination on December 9th, 1943, at the Armed Services Induction Station in Newark, New Jersey, he was classified 4-F due to a perforated left eardrum and chronic mastoiditis. Whilst in New York, Sinatra will be making an appointment for another examination at the same induction centre.

  • 1962. The Beatles play The Cavern Club at lunchtime. At night they perform at the Thistle Cafe, West Kirby, Wirral, Cheshire. This performance is the first for which Brian Epstein took a commission, although he only takes 10% to cover the cost of petrol, oil, and miscellaneous expenses. The Beatles are paid the substantial (for that time) fee of 18 pounds. The Thistle Café was a dance instruction hall and cafe, and for this performance Brian Epstein convinced the proprietor to call it "The Beatle Club". The show was advertised as the "Grand Opening of The Beatle Club", but The Beatles never played there again! Support group: Steve Day & the Drifters.

  • 1967. The Beatles are recording in Studio Two at EMI's Abbey Road Studios, London. Working on: takes 1-9 of the song "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". It wasn't until The Beatles had recorded the song that Paul got the idea to make the song the thematic pivot for the album. The recording session begins at 7:00 pm and ends at 2:30 am.

  • 1971. Bandleader Harry Roy dies at his home in London, aged 69. Despite having retired in 1963, Roy had recently been fronting a Dixieland Jazz band in Brighton. He had a long and colourful career which included fronting the resident band at the London Pavilion. His private life was no less colourful. He married Princess Pearl, the daughter of Sir Charles Vyner Brooke, the White Rajah of Sarawak. When the eventually divorced in 1947, Harry married a dancer from London's notorious Windmill Theatre.

  • 1994. Bobby Farrell, lead singer of Boney M, is given a two year suspended sentence when he appears in court at Leystad, Holland. Farrell admitted pouring petrol over his wife during a row in August 1992 when she threatened to sell the copyright to the group's name which she owned. Although the singer said he would set fire to his wife, a friend was able to calm the situation. Farrell told the court that he did not mean to harm his wife. He was sentenced to one month in prison, suspended for two years.

    2000. Guitarist C.C. DeVille announces that he's leaving Poison after Bret Michaels refuses to sign up DeVille's other band, Samantha 7 as support for their latest reunion tour. After a while, he's pursuaded to return to the band.

    2000. Dr. Dre files a lawsuit against his accountants, alleging funds from his hits were incorrectly paid to his record label and not him.

    2000. The Humane Society Of The United States issues a press release attacking rapper DMX for his video for the track, "What's My Name". The release states that images in the video of pitbulls in chains snarling at each other in what seems to be a fight ring, "glamourizes dogfighting and perpetuates the stigma that all pitbulls are dangerous and, therefore, unfit to have as pets". The video does not show dogs fighting and the record label, Island/Def Jam insisted that no dogs faught or were in any way harmed during the making of the video.

    2000. Jerry Lee Lewis goes to a local hospital after cutting his finger with a knife at his home in Nesbitt, Mississippi. As the finger needs stitches, Lewis is given a local anesthetic to which he has a bad allergic reaction. He's transferred to Methodist Healthcare-Central Hospital in Memphis for treatment to counteract that and held overnight for observation.

    2000. Muse take time out from their European tour to fly to London to receive the NME Premier Award for best New Artist. After the ceremony they head back to London's City Airport where a Lear Jet is waiting to take them back to Hanover where they're opening for Bush. As the plane is starting to take off, one of its engines bursts into flames. The pilot aborts and manages to guide the plane to an area of grass next to the runway. No one is hurt.

  • 2001. The weapons possession and bribery trial of Sean "Puffy" Combs continues at the State Supreme Court in Manhattan. Two witnesses both testify that they saw rapper Jamal "Shyne" Barrow holding a gun during a shooting in Times Square in December 1999 that left three people injured. Although they named Barrow and identified the gun as being in a group of people surrounding "Puffy", neither stated that they had seen him holding the weapon.
    Meanwhile, on the other side of the country, Combs legal problems continue. Inge Bongo files a lawsuit against the rapper in the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles. The suit alleges that the Beverly Hills home she was renting from him for $ 25,000 a month was "infested with insects, rodents and vermin". It also alleges that due to a broken door lock which the landlord would not replace, she was forced to access the house through a dog-flap in the door. A spokesman for the rapper, who had other matters to deal with, said that Bongo had vacated the property last August owing $ 50,000 in unpaid rent and $ 40,000 for damage done to the house. The suit was described as "completely frivolous".

    2001. Country music songwriter, John Jarrad dies from respiratory failure in Nashville, aged 47. He had 11 number 1 country hits to his name.

    2001. LeAnn Rimes takes the unusual step of posting a personal message to fans on her website, asking them not to but her new album, "I Need You". She tells them that she's suing both her manager (who happens to be her father) and her record label.

  • 2002. Creed are forced to cancel tonight's show at the Continental Airlines Arena in New Jersey after the death of guitarist Mark Tremonti's mother. The concert has been rescheduled for February 23rd.

    2002. Drummer Josh Freese sits in as replacement for No Doubt's Adrian Young as they play tonight's "Superbowl Bash" in New Orleans. Young has taken time out to be on hand for the birth of his first child and will miss two other shows.

    2002. Gerald Cattermole, the 52 year old father of S Club 7's Paul Cattermole is sentenced to two years and nine months in prison when he appears at St. Albans' Crown Court. Cattermole Snr. was found guilty of twice having sex with a girl and indecently assaulting her friend. Both girls were 14 years old and have learning difficulties.

    2002. A copyright-infringement lawsuit against R&B trio TLC is filed with the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. The suit, brought by ex-Living Color lead singer, Corey Glover and his songwriting partner Michael Cirincione, alleges that parts of TLC's 1999 hit, "Unpretty" were lifted from a song called "Make Up Your Mind", offered by the writers to the group for their album, Fanmail". Although "Make Up Your Mind" was rejected, the suit claims that "significant, uncredited portions" have been used in "Unpretty". The suit also names record producer Dallas Austin along with record labels LaFace, Arista and BMG Music as well as EMI Music Publishing.

  • 2003. Mongo Santamaria, the Cuban conga player and percussionist, who was at the forefront of latin-jazz fusion, dies in a Miami hospital, aged 85. He had been on life support after suffering a stroke the previous week. His only mainstream commercial success was in 1963 when he hit the U.S. Top 10 with a version of Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man". He will also be remembered for writing "Afro Blue", a song made famous by John Coltrane.
